New research: UK State of Tracking 2026

Leaf Signal

We're excited to share our 2026 UK State of Tracking report - a comprehensive audit of conversion tracking across 500 of the UK's biggest Shopify brands.

We checked whether those brands feed Meta, Google Ads and GA4 the event, customer and product data they need to be effective - accurately and consistently.

Almost every single one failed, exhibiting at least one core tracking issue across those key platforms.

That means almost every single one of them is making targeting, bidding and budget decisions on data that's already wrong before it reaches the ad/analytics platform. And that matters.

Why we ran this audit

Conversion tracking has become one of the few controllable levers left in performance marketing. As Meta and Google automate more of targeting and bidding, the data feeding those systems matters more than ever - because a platform can only optimise towards what it can actually see.

At the same time, the signal environment has become more complicated, with Safari and Firefox restricting what browsers pass through, iOS opt-in rates for cross-app tracking remaining low, and ever-evolving privacy regulations across the UK and EU adding new consent requirements sites have to keep pace with.

Most brands know this is happening in the abstract. Very few know how it's showing up in their own account.

We built the audit to answer that question with data rather than assumption - across the events that actually drive ecommerce decisions.

What the report covers

  • Where tracking breaks most - by issue type, by retail vertical, and by platform

  • Which verticals and platforms come out worst, and which hold up best

  • What broken tracking actually costs DTC brands

  • What gold standard tracking looks like

We'll be publishing a closer look at some of these findings on the blog over the coming weeks. For now, the full breakdown is in the report.

How we checked

We audited the 5 core ecommerce events - Page View, Product View, Add to Cart, Start Checkout, and Purchase - across Meta, Google Ads, and GA4, using a combination of Leaf Signal’s automated tracking diagnostics, AI-assisted pattern recognition, and manual verification to simulate real customer journeys across each site.
